LECTURE ABOUT ART AND MATHEMATICS We are surrounded by technologies whose fundamental principles are mathematical abstractions. For many of us, however, abstractions do not make sense unless related to concrete experience. And so our culture tends to become incomprehensible. This predicament poses a challenge for the media artist. V. Flusser used the term “envisioning”, to describe “the power of drawing the concrete out of the abstract”. How can artists transform mathematical concepts into experiences? Is this even possible, or are we condemned to be alienated from our own technologies?

DR. HECTOR RODRIGUEZ is a digital artist and theorist whose work explores the unique possibilities of computational technologies to reconfigure the history and aesthetics of moving images. His works have been screened and awarded at many international festivals. He was Artistic Director of the Microwave International Media Art Festival, and is now a member of the Writing Machine Collective. He currently teaches at the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong.
