Anna Zaradny's “Go Go Theurgy” concert relates to the recent of the same title. The performance includes both of the compositions included on the record.
A live performance brings those pieces to another level of experience, linking material from the original constructions with improvisation and to the aspect the sound in the space. Intense music packed with a full range of frequencies teems with sensuality and anxiety, while its palpably dense and detailed texture is constantly filled with tension and a sense of urgency. The crystal-clear narration of the performance creates a framework within which Zaradny's uniquely intricate and emotionally driven sound can work. Her music is often said to defy genre limitations. Although bravely experimental, it is precisely structured at the same time, and sometimes builds the kind of momentum usually associated with pop music.
“Go Go Theurgy” recalls something primordial but it also makes clear cultural references, creating its own idiosyncratic value.
Octopus is a short film created for a piece of music. It engages in a dialogue with experimental music tapping into the format of a music video – so characteristic of popular music. Here, Zaradny frames the common ground for moving image and sound. The work is set in a variety of contexts – from an informal relationship with the traditional 'music video' format, to the presence of the artist in his or her own work, to the level of organization of visual structure stemming from abstract musical composition.
The narration and the dynamics of the musical structure provide a point of reference for the video's script. The play on the codes of popular culture and functions of a music video leads Octopus into an ambiguous aesthetic dimension. On the one hand, the visual side is heavily inspired by the music and directly synchronised with it, not only in terms of the repetitions, but also in terms of the very timbre of the music. On the other, the artist's presence directly creates the most important part of the video. Playing on the format of the music video, Zaradny also alters the context of the original piece, generating an entirely new aesthetic dimension.
