Original idea: A guitar is played with an Ebow, in an attempt to create pitches that are as close to those of the sine waves as possible. But since the guitar is not justly tuned, it is always out of tune with the sine waves. Extra techniques, such as bending, are employed to compensate for this difference, or to further the out-of-tune pitches creating different degrees of beating. The three slightly out-of-tune pitches (two sine waves, and the guitar) create irregular beating. However, since the sine waves are randomly arpeggiated, the guitarist’s reaction isl always be delayed, or mismatched with the sine wave. Therefore uncertainty is furthered.
13 pairs of sine waves channels, each pair of a different fraction and with slightly offset pitch, while the fundamental might be in any frequency. One or more fractions are chosen and randomly arpeggiated, and each pitch is played up to 45 seconds. Because of the differences between each pitch, a beating occurs.
Alternative piece for the night: A Signal of the E-bowed guitar is fed to the computer, and the source of sound is processed with vibrato, pitched delay, and granulation. Moving the E-bow in different positions of the strings with different pressures would create variety of timbres and each corresponds with different combinations of sound processors. Different dimensions of sound are to be produced via this process.
Eric Wong - Born 1981 in Minneapolis, MN, grew up in Hong Kong, studied Psychology at the University of Minnesota. He is a guitarist, computer musician, and improviser. Although he took some lessons at young age, he is mostly an autodidact. He focuses on sound textures and perception of sound.
Currently based in Berlin, he has performed in Germany, Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Macau, USA, Taiwan, China, Poland, Switzerland, and Czech Republic.
In 2016 he co-curated and performed in UNSTUMM HONG KONG, a cross media improvisation performance with musicians and visual artists from Germany and Hong Kong.
