Werner Klotz works exclusively within site-specific and interactive contexts relying on viewer participation to emphasize themes and ideas unique to each project. Using a variety of materials and strategies including light, sound, video and mechanics, these installations engage viewers in ways that address their orientation towards a site and serve as instruments for perception into what makes each site, and each viewer, a unique point of view.

He was recently commissioned (installation July 2018), together with the artist Jim Campbell, to make a public art installation at the Union Square Station of the Central Subway in San Francisco, making a large scale (100 Meter long) kinetic light installation. He realized from 2014 - 2017 3 permanent large scale kinetic sculptures at the sculpture park Kunsthaus Dosse Park in Wittstock, Germany.

He is the recipient of the New York City Art Commission award for excellence in Public Art and the Marler Medien Kunst Preis Raum-Medien, Germany's most respected Media Art Award.

He taught Installation, Social Sculpture and Public Art at the San Francisco Art Institute from 1999 – 2002. He also for a short while at the CAC in Oakland.

He lives and works in New York City and Berlin.
