»MNM v1.0« - Christian Graupner
Being in its functions derived from a one-armed bandit, this installation provides many interfaces, through which the user can re-organise and re-perform the sound & video compositions of Mieko Suzuki & Ming Poon.
MNM portrays the Hiroshima born sound artist Mieko Suzuki and the singaporian dancer Ming Poon in their sound- and body performances and generates an ongoing media concert that creates always new video and sound clusters. The headstrong canonic composition out of vocal and percussion loops depicts the topic of total (body) control in golden times of casino-capitalism and its meltdown. The protagonists' performances are directly connected to the form and materiality of a triptych frame and a huge Maneki-Neko derivated figure which underlines the sculptural character of MNM. Visitors are invited to co-compose and influence the flow of the so called Humatic Re- Performance by feeding and operating the triple channel installation like a gambling-machine or to control MNM like a musical instrument."

»Navigating Noise« - Kerstin Ergenzinger
year of creation: 2013
The experimential, sound-based installation »Navigating Noise« is a poetic exploration of the means of orientation in space through sound. The work creates a ‘performative environment’ demanding an active participation of the visitor, both physically and mentally. The ephemeral installation subverts our common visual means of orientation in our surroundings, through the distinct yet indefinable presence of sound that is sometimes reminiscent of natural ambient noise, sometimes reminding us of man-made mechanisms or modern technolog. The structures of the soundscapes are generated through a physical net, which is vibrating, resembling a wired map or a mental diagram of connectivities.

»Transitions« - Julius Stahl
year of creation: 2011-2013 (work in progress)
Emerging from a custom built wireless system of microphones and headphones, the installation enables people to exchange their audible perception and therefore their hearing perspective. It generates a paradoxical situation of perception divided in several manners. Beginning with subtle variants in the exploration of the sensual spaces it rises to highest contrasts in the audio-visual perception with the increasing distance between the partners. Every move changes the hearing perspective – yet not in the usual manner. An exploration of relationships between the senses of hearing and seeing.

Who’s Afraid Of Wong Kar-Wai?
The title of this section reflects a humorous, youthful and rebellious attitude behind the curatorial idea of the current exhibition. While undeniably one of the most important artistic figures from Hong Kong in recent years, Wong Kar-Wai has also increasingly became a stereotypical, nostalgic and institutionalized canon that stands sharply opposite to the notions of edginess, and creative idiosyncrasy that he and his works once used to symbolize. Arguably one of the best-known Hong Kong artists to the European audience, Wong Kar-Wai stands as an imaginary figure that the participating artists of the current exhibition aspire to contest, overcome and displace.
The exhibition is kindly supported by the Arts Development Fund of the Home Affairs Bureau, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
Carla CHAN Ho-Choi 陳好彩 : »As I Flow Gently Inside You« [狹]
As I flow gently inside you is a video performance and installation that explores intimacy between bodies in situated environments. Two strangers are asked to stand naked facing each other in a small container. The two participants can act freely under the given situations setup by the artist but they are not allowed to touch each other directly. The subtle exchanges of glances, breathes, smells and sounds made during the performance become a kind of micro drama between the two participants, creating an unusual tension that is at once erotic, oppressive and disorienting. As I flow gently inside you aims to evoke a feeling of sensual claustrophobia that lain underneath human intimacy.

Alan KWAN Tze-Wai 關子維 : »Bad Trip«
Bad Trip is an immersive interactive system that enables people to navigate my mind using a game controller. Since November 2011, every moment of my life has been logged by a video camera that mounts on my eyeglasses, producing an expanding database of digitalized visual memories. Using custom virtual reality software, I design a virtual mindscape where people can navigate and experience my memories and dreams. The mindscape grows continually as fresh memories and dreams come in. Creator, Visual Design, Architect, Programming, Sound Design: Alan Kwan
Music: Vertigo by Robert Rich
Software: Quest 3D, 3ds Max, Esri CityEngine
XEX Group. : »Anádelta«
Anádelta is a Greek symbol which means "upside-down delta". It also represents the symbol Nabla. The name comes from the Greek word for a Hebrew harp, which had a similar shape. In mathematics, Nabla is used to denote the del operator. It results in different kind of recursive process. In the program, it generates different geometric form and architectural structure. The work is experimenting the possible outcome in combining the recursion in audio-visual presentation.
Anádelta is a digital installation that consists of a 3-axis controlling device. The 3-axis controlling device consists of 3 positioning touchable sensors in each side. Each sensor is able to send out both MIDI and OSC message for controlling the music and visual elements. Each side built with a laser emitter. It allowed performer to realize the exact position on the sensor for an accurate playing on notes.
It breaks the traditional way of playing music and visual in performance. The triangulation design best fit into the golden mean of a human body. It invented a new gesture of performing.

Silas FONG Sum-Yu 方琛宇 : »Memory Disorder«
Is there an order for memories? The artists sees Cinema as an art of memories. It manipulates the perspective and the perception of time by the audience.
In this work the artist tries to create an experience of memories and imagination by letting moving images appear and disappear. Footage ranges from telecined super 8 film, web cam, photographs and digital video cameras at different qualities. It is displayed in a web-browsing environment in multi-channels. With different internet connection speed, system of the computer and the dimension of monitor, the work can be viewed differently in the sequential arrangement and content narrated.
KONG Chun-Hei 鄺鎮禧 : »Snow«
Made of 20 drawn pieces of "snow" the artist used to make an animation which is shown on a television. So that, "snow" could be isolated from the other channels and be treated as the only speech of the television. Without other programs, the television is working in it's specific way. It seems being liberated owing to the disorder.
WONG Chung Yu 黃琮瑜 : »Sodom«
real time simulation
Sodom aims at describing some phenomena of life through real time simulation of computer program. This work takes Love, Desire, and Money as three exploring elements. It states the struggle between goodness and evil of humans through studying the relations of the above three elements. It tries to express the suffering of desire and the endless pursuit of beauty by humans.

Isabelle Choinière
»To the modification of corporality (corporalité) that generates corporeality (corporéité); a presentation of our process based on strategies of destabilization«
Isabelle Choinière' research looks at the ways in which the infiltration of technological thought in the contemporary performative scene may find applications in the development of new performative models. Driven by a syncretistic approach, her work is based on the strategy of renewing both sensorial experience and perception because it has become evident that technology in the twenty-first century has paved a path for perpetual synaesthesia – meaning it is formed as much by kinesthesia of the real body as by exteroception of the mediated body. As a result, it is possible to consider a new relationship between somatics and technology capable of engendering new aesthetic, cognitive and communicational paradigms.

»The sonorous cognition of the movement«
Starting from an interdisciplinary perspective of methodological integration of body and sound in Isabelle Choinière dance performance, this lecture will attempt to define the general aesthetic notion of bodysoundscape. In this context, the performer on the Isabelle Choinière's composition process considers the sonorous body potential as a mean of work, using a great range of organic sounds which involves a deeper listening to one's self, in order to create a new organisation of a body sensibility. In this framework, my analysis about the new creation by Isabelle Choinière will penetrate both the matter of sound as well as the structure of the body, tackling the idea of a transformation of the body and the sound through technologies on the stage. The use of new technologies can modify the perceptive geography of the performer by increasing his consciousness of internal physiological process of movement through sonorous feedbacks and induces the creation of a new movement, a new anatomic architecture. These aspects of the composition influence also the spectator's perception and change the notion of listening on the stage.

The Metabody as Sensual Experience
The focus of my practical and theoretical research concerns dance and new media and specifically, digital choreographic models which follow new aesthetic paradigms affecting representation, enunciation, narratology, composition, and reception. Amongst these paradigms, it situates the primary role and impact of the computer as a metamedium; mediation as a form of non-matrixed representation and new strategy of performativity; new media as digital "stages" that highlight perceptual experience and spectatorial participation; and digital logic as introducing new modes of composition based on principles of automation, hypermediality, intermediality, modularity, generativity, interfacing, and interactivity.
The lecture proposes a brief overview of a spectrum of digital platforms ranging from audiovisual projections in performance to "intelligent" stages, interactive installations, immersive sensory environments, networked performances, and wearable technologies, proposing to consider these interfaces as new viewing/sensing devices. It argues that form, content, meaning, and reception are not only intimately linked under the notion of "device", but further, that in encapsulating and embodying a concept, instrument of perception, and discursive mode, devices reveal perspective as a new form of dramaturgy and artistic parameter.
From this theoretical framework, I examine the relevance of Isabelle Choiniere's latest creation within a broader context of the Metabody. Highlighting the ways an artistic practice involving technology and grounding in a somatic understanding of the body can express and communicate the sensual body, the lecture further examines how and why the particular perspective the work generates as a viewing/sensing device can be considered as confrontational for some, or a pure aesthetic experience for others. In particular, questions of field, territory, relationship, resonance, texture, perception and the gaze will be addressed.

»Relational & Multi-Dimensional Perception«
Perception, rather than being a purely biologically determined capacity, is a process of epigenetic and technogenetic modulation, i.e., of transformation in relation to a technological environment that shapes perception in particular ways. Contemporary media tend to assume and expand problematic dualistic perceptions, the genealogy of which we could trace at least to the birth of the Greek Theatre architecture: a linear, circular and dualistic separation between a fixed spectator and a moving reality. Euclidean geometry, perspective and cartesianism have also contributed to align perception to a three dimensional field in which movements can be captured and reduced to planes, lines and points of control. Three or four-dimensionality is not an ontological feature of reality, but a peculiar form of technologically engineered perception. But no spectator is ever fully external to what s/he sees, and movement is never totally reducible to planes and lines drawn from a fixed point of vision. As in quantum physics we are always entangled with the reality we observe, and the very act of observation transforms that reality. As in proprioception, movement disseminates in multimodal and changing microperceptions. Experimentation with technologies of embodiment may generate new potential perceptions that foreground our immanent, relational entanglement with what we perceive, as well as the irreducibility of our movements and perceptions to three/four dimensional lines of capture. The development of new forms of non-dualistic relational multidimensional perception appear to be an urgent ontological and political task for a new social and planetary ecology.

»Birth and Death of Dualistic Media«
The birth of tragedy in Ancient Greece represents a significant step concerning the development of dualistic media which have been dominant since then. Currently, works of artists, engineers and media designers like Kevin Warwick, Dale Herigstad, Neil Harbisson or Jaime del Val represent attempts to move beyond this media tradition. I regard their tasks as highly important ones. In my presentation, I will explain why I regard this to be the case by referring to central facets of extramedial meanings of these works in progress.

The fusion of East and West creates a unique character as well as history that make Hong Kong unlike any other place in the world. The five artists used their own innovative ways to portray, imagine and observe this hybrid culture via different lenses. Lo Chun Yip’s <21 years later> restaged the recent political turmoil of Hong Kong that bordered between the personal and the social. Beneath the flashy graphics and wild electronic sounds, Choi Sai-Ho’s “Star” is a serious trip that confronted the island’s colonial past. Recycling materials from a video game, Ip Yuk-Yiu’s “Another Day of Depression in Hong Kong” is a virtual study of this mega city through the eyes of the Other. A dark journey about the pain of growing up, Alan Kwan’s short drama < 17.9 18 18.1 > recounts the secret story of a Hong Kong youth in heat. Carla Chan resurrected the desert in “When a Circle meets the Sky” as an antithetical image of Hong Kong to question the notion of environment in the technological world.
Forget about Jackie Chan and bury your Wong Kar-Wai, this night will let you experience the B-side of Hong Kong unlike anything you have seen before.

»Tiresias« – Robert Wechsler und Andreas Bergsland
Tiresias is an interactive dance piece exploring different ranges of dynamic in expressive gesture – from small discrete finger movements, via medium sized "conversational" gestures, to large, energetic swipes and explosive outbursts – and how these movements can be interpreted sonically.
The title plays on the composer Francois Bayle’s theoretical work dealing with the phenomenology of listening dealing with acousmatic music – music without visual sound sources. While Bayle maps out modes of musical sound/play using movement metaphors like “rub”, “pull”, “push” or “slide”, we would like to turn this around and instead map out movement modes using sound. The sounds palette of the piece is based on hundreds of unique pre-recorded sound particles. The sound particles make up a rich amalgam of sound objects, differing greatly in quality and feel, and the degree to which they invite concrete associations and narratives. They are played one at a time or concatenated into short chains, dense clouds or roaring sound masses, depending on the dancer’s movements. Certain gestures can also enable movements within the temporal envelope of one “frozen” single particle, thus exploring its inner details. The piece utilizes cutting-edge camera-based sensor technology and custom-built software implemented in MotionComposer, a device under development, designed to transform movement into music for persons with disabilities.

Advice
If you want a deep breath of media festival, check the Friday/Saturday combination ticket, when most events will happen. 25 €/ 18 €
If your time is limited, but you still want a deep inside view, choose a Day Saver Ticket for Friday or Saturday, which can only be bought in the box office.
If you aren't interested in the various performances but instead want the full audiovisual art events, get the Session Ticket (25 €/ 18 €), which is valid for four events on four days, incl. the Clubbing and the three microscope sessions and the exhibition.
The most relaxed you can enjoy the festival days when calling the Festival Pass your own. This allows you to visit almost all events (except Flesh Waves) of the Festival.
For spontaneous decisions individual tickets can be acquired directly at the venue the night of the event.
